2009 Algae Biomass Summit

ABO Announces 3rd Annual Algae Biomass Summit

The Algal Biomass Organization announces the dates and location of its 3rd Annual Algae Biomass Summit, hosted by Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati and Byrne & Company, Ltd. It also announced a Call for Presentations for the summit, which will take place October 7-9, 2009 at the Marriot San Diego Hotel & Marina in San Diego, California.

The Algae Biomass Summit is currently accepting papers and presentation abstracts from now through July 5, 2009.

“Momentum continues to grow,” said John Pierce, Member, Renewable Energy and CleanTech Practice at Wilson Sonsini Goodrich & Rosati. “From our first summit in 2007 which drew 350, to this year where we expect close to 1,000, global leaders, scientists, innovators, funders and policy makers look to the Algae Biomass Summit as the premiere algae-focused industry event.”

Past speakers and attendees have included national and international technologists, producers, scientists, investors, and policy-makers. During the course of the event, leaders and attendees will discuss issues of critical importance to the emerging algae industry, including the commercial viability of algae production, current government and private initiatives, evolving technologies, processing concepts, life cycle analysis, and venture and project finance.

“It’s never been more important for the industry to come together to find economically and environmentally sustainable solutions to climate change,” said Tom Byrne, CEO of Byrne & Company, Ltd., co-host of the summit. “Interest and investment is at an all time high, but there’s still a great amount of work to be done. We look forward to a highly productive event.”

Algal Biomass Organization Questions Accuracy of University of Virginia Algae Life Cycle Study
ABO believes that reliance on obsolete data and faulty assumptions undermines all conclusions

WASHINGTON, D.C. (January 25, 2010) - The Algal Biomass Organization, today challenged the conclusions of a published report in Environmental Science and Technology claiming that “conventional crops have lower environmental impacts than algae in energy use, greenhouse gas emissions and water.”  The report was based upon obsolete data and grossly outdated business models, and overlooked tremendous improvements in technology and processes across the production cycle. ABO strongly believes that these obsolete data and faulty assumptions seriously undermine the credibility of the study’s conclusions. View Full Story

Congressional efforts are continuing to ensure that algae-based biofuels qualify for federal tax credits. Several companies, including Exxon Mobil Corp., believe algae might one day become a major feedstock for renewable fuels.
