ABO Technical Standards : Contributing Order to the Algal Industry

Technical Standards Committee Mission Set by ABO Bylaws:

  • Develop and advocate industry standards and best practices
  • Liaise with Members, Standards Organizations, and Government
  • Facilitate information flow between industry stakeholders
  • Review ABO technical positions and recommendations
  • Undertake special projects as directed by the ABO Board

Initial 2010 Objective: Issue Draft Recommendations for industry comment on Algal Industry Descriptive Language and Measurement  Methodologies.

Rational for 2010 Objective: A common language is required in the algal industry to describe prospective large-scale cultivation facilities and their collateral supply, processing and delivery operations.  This will accelerate the industry’s growth by harmonizing and facilitating the calculation of LCA’s, environmental footprints, business metrics and economic impacts.

Proposed Activities in 2010 and beyond: 1) Promote common definitions, 2) Recommend measurement methodologies, 3) Draft recommended Product/Process Standards or Specifications for industry comment.

  • By Sep 28 Algal Biomass Summit: Distribute Proposed Definitions of Green Boundary Metrics for industry comment.
  • In 2012: Propose Measurement Methodologies for Green Box metrics and incorporate industry feedback .
  • Into the Future: Identify, adapt, generate and recommend Product and Process Standards to serve algal products industry.
