The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy
The Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy is seeking a motivated and highly qualified candidate for an exciting full-time permanent position as a Physical Scientist located in the Office of the Biomass Program in Washington, D.C. This position is responsible for Program management activities and maintaining ongoing relationships with Program awardees with respect to the Algae Feedstock and Conversion Platforms. The Scientist will support the implementation of the Department of Energy Algae Workshop Roadmap as it relates to the Biomass Program; support algae activities related to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act; utilize scientific expertise to gain an understanding of barriers and challenges related to algae as a feedstock and its conversion to an array of advanced hydrocarbon fuels; become knowledgeable regarding studies and analytical activities being conducted by private-sector organizations and government agencies in the algae R&D biofuels area; liaise and coordinate with national laboratories, other federal agencies, and key stakeholder groups on algae R&D and analytical activities; and respond to congressional inquiries and other public or government budget inquiries regarding the state of algae development in the United States.

Are you excited by the idea of growing our fuel supply using microalgae? The NRC is looking for an enthusiastic, motivated person to fill a position in renewable bioenergy research on the beautiful Atlantic coast. |
The incumbent will work in support of the Algal Biofuels initiative of the National Bioproducts Program at the NRC’s Institute for Marine Biosciences (NRC-IMB). Under the direction of the Microalgae Research Officer, the incumbent will be primarily responsible for developing and optimizing efficient harvesting and processing techniques for algal biomass cultivated in large-scale (up to 2500L) enclosed photobioreactors (PBRs) for the purposes of biofuel production. These will include harvesting by high-speed process centrifugation, lyophilization of harvested biomass and isolation of algal oils with a commercial lipid extraction unit.
The incumbent will consult with the Algae Culture Technologist to provide technical assistance for routine cultivation of microalgae in the PBRs. Regular duties will include the maintenance of detailed records of algal processing activities for strains actively under biofuels-related cultivation as well as an inventory of processing equipment and supplies. He/She will also be required to present biological data clearly and accurately.
