Mutant Algae May Fuel Cars
Chemically-modified algae may become key to the production of hydrogen gas which seen by researchers as a next-generation fuel source. "We believe there is a fundamental advantage in looking at the production of hydrogen by photosynthesis as a renewable fuel," said David Tiede, a senior chemist the U.S. Department of Energy's Argonne National Laboratory.

Solazyme Produces World's First Algal-Based Jet Fuel
SAN FRANSISCO, California -- Solazyme Inc. announced that it has produced the world's first microbial-derived jet fuel. Solazyme's algal-derived aviation fuel as analyzed by the Southwest Research Institute (SwRI), one of the nations leading fuel analytical laboratories, passed the eleven "most challenging specifications needed to meet the ASTM D1655 standard for Aviation Turbine Fuel.

Bill Gates Invests in Algae Fuel
SAN DIEGO, California -- Bill Gates' investment firm is funding Sapphire Energy, a company that intends to make auto fuel from algae. Sapphire Energy said Wednesday that a series B round will bring the total amount it has raised to more than $100 million. Investors include Gates' investment firm Cascade Investment, as well as Arch Venture Partners, Wellcome Trust, and Venrock.
